So many promises, yet so few deliver

Wifi cameras are capturing a greater share of the CCTV security camera market. The technology seems irresistible. Add to that the promises of being wireless, ease of installation, and simple operation. Wireless Wifi security cameras sound ideal for homeowners and small businesses.

In way less time than it takes to play nine holes on a Saturday afternoon, you can install an up-and-running, complete Wifi security system! Can’t beat that!

Or maybe we should examine this marvel a bit closer.

What do they mean by “wireless”?

If the grocery store is selling boneless chicken breasts, the indication is that all bones have been removed. They aren’t mostly boneless, not if they expect to get any repeat sales.

The push behind Wifi Wireless cameras is that they need no video cable connection to a recorder or receiver. They use the power of the internet to record to the cloud. Great idea until the internet is unavailable. When it goes down so does the entire Wifi security camera system.

“Wireless Wifi Camera System” does not guarantee it’s wireless!

What?

Some providers are using the wireless term rather loosely. They are applying it only to the lack of need for a video, cable-wired connection from the cameras to a receiving device. Often, buried deeper in the advertising is the mention that their cameras are not battery-operated.

They have a wire, a crucial one that cannot be ignored. It’s a power cable that requires hook-up either directly into your home electrical wiring system or plugging into an existing electrical outlet. Without it the Wifi cameras cannot function and transmit digital video signals.

That’s not wireless, any more than a twelve-piece bucket of KFC is boneless.

We’re talking about holes drilled through your exterior walls to supply power to your new outdoor Wifi security cameras. Hiring a professional electrician if mounting locations are not within a few feet of existing interior electrical outlets. And suddenly that nine holes of golf is looking better than this hyped-up WIfi camera system that’s a nightmare to install.

“Battery-powered” is an equally vague term

It's important to pay close attention to battery life. This is an area where EufyCam2 truly shines offering an entire year of battery life. That’s about forty-six hours of total usage. It's important to note that battery-operated cameras operate with a physical (PIR) motion sensor that activates the camera when motion is detected.

When comparing EufyCam2 to other wireless camera offerings, we discovered that there is no standard test of battery life for wireless, battery-operated Wifi cameras. Every single manufacturer has their brand specifications of what so many months of use may be on their camera. They design it to be flattering for their product.

For example, one competitor claims "6 months," but when digging into their specifications, you discover that "6 months" really means about fourteen hours under optimal conditions. Fourteen hours across six months translates to about five minutes per day.

One of the biggest offenders claims "2 years" for only about fifteen hours of use, which translates to less than 1.5 minutes a day across two years.

Most wire-free cameras are easy to install if they don’t have a power cord. The majority of wireless (also known as "stick up") cameras come with simple, magnetic bases. While these magnetic bases are slick and easy to install, they offer zero protection against anyone hitting the cameras or merely taking the cameras as there is no locking mechanism in place. Most companies selling Wifi battery-operated cameras combat this by suggesting an install height of over seven feet, but any objects such as bats, crowbars, and even a hockey stick can displace the magnetic mount.

Another major drawback of high install height is that you're going to capture more area, reduce the adequate image quality, and likely create more false positives. More motion events mean less battery life.

The Eufycam2 comes with both magnetic mounts and screw mounts in the box. Major competitors often only include magnetic mounts. The screw mount is still less secure than our professional line cameras, so it's important to mount the camera in a place where potential thieves can't reach it. With that being said, using a screw mount is way more secure than a magnetic one.

Are you going to get hit with monthly fees on your new Wifi camera system?

The EufyCam2 offers secure local storage and doesn’t require a monthly subscription either. Most wire-free cameras require cloud storage from the manufacturer, which generally costs $3 to $5 a month per camera. This adds hundreds of dollars over a few years just to use your cameras.
