How to Design a Security Camera System for a Larger Irregularly Shaped Home
Not all houses are a perfect rectangle or square. In these examples, we will be showing 2 versions of how to design a security system for a home that has more variation in its floorplan.
Version 1
Explanation
Goals: This is a more complex structure, so we made two version of this system, each with different goals. The goal of this first version is to guard the access points and three car garage of the home. While the goal of the second version also covers the yard.
The Red cones are the line of sight for our most commonly used camera: the Warrior 2.0. You will have a clear enough picture with these cameras to be able to ID someone at 50 feet, because they shoot in 1080P at 30 pictures per second.
The Green cone in the three car garage is the line of sight for one of our most commonly used cameras: the Deputy 2.0. You will have a clear enough picture with these cameras to be able to ID someone at 50 feet, which is plenty for this garage, because they shoot in 1080P at 30 pictures per second.

Version 2
This house wanted a few specialty cameras for a few reasons. One addition they wanted was a fisheye 360 degree camera to cover the indoor entrance and entryway. The home owner also requested cameras with a motorized optical zoom for distance in the back yard, since the area extended much farther in the back then the front.
The Orange cones are showing the Warrior 4.0. This camera has line of sight for recognizing someone up to 75ft away, with a resolution of 4MP @ 25 frames per second.
The Purple cones are the line of sight for our next most popular line of cameras which adjustable lenses that can have up to 4x optical zoom. The The Detective 4.0 is great for soffits or eaves. The benefit to this camera is recognizing someone at a farther distance of 125ft. Just like with a point-and-shoot camera, when you zoom in on an area, your field-of-view narrows.
The Turquoise cone, or circular image, is a panoramic fisheye camera. The Radius 8.0 is a 360 degree camera perfect for mounting in the center of a room. This could be considered a more specialty camera since it also has a built in mic and speaker for two way audio.

The Warrior is our most popular camera model. It is tied with the Deputy in terms of how easy it is to install and position, since neither camera requires you to remove any part of the camera to screw it into the wall/ceiling/soffit. This makes it ideal for outdoor use as you don't have a tendency to trap moisture in the lens, as is common with dome cameras, where you have to remove the outer glass dome to mount them. The 81 degree lens is great balance between covering a large area and identifying faces and license plates. Although you can use this camera inside or out, the most common use of the Warrior models (the camera comes in 2MP, 4MP, or 8MP) is to cover the side of buildings or large sections of yards.

The Deputy is our second most popular camera model. It is tied with the Warrior in terms of how easy it is to install and position, since neither camera requires you to remove any part of the camera to screw it into the wall/ceiling/soffit. This makes it ideal for outdoor use as you don't have a tendency to trap moisture in the lens, as is common with dome cameras, where you have to remove the outer glass dome to mount them. The 110 or 118 degree lens is best used to cover an entire room at once (by installing it in a corner) or to cover a wide area of a smaller yard, as wider lenses always decrease how far away you can identify a person of license plate. Although you can use this camera inside or out, the most common uses of the Deputy models (the camera comes in 2MP, 4MP, or 4K variants) are to install the camera in the corner of a room or to cover front doors and porches outdoors. Two Deputies are often installed back to back to make a 220-236 degree view, such as in the middle of a wall. (This two camera solution has less of that dizzying "fisheye" look that is common with 180 degree cameras and is also usually cheaper.)

The Detective has a motorized telephoto lens that allows you to optically zoom in to see a distant area more clearly. You can adjust the angle of view with our apps, over the web, or via your SCW NVR. Just like with a point-and-shoot camera or a pair of binoculars, when narrow the field-of-view, you zoom in on an area and you can see more detail in that area. Although the Detective is a popular camera for homes that have a mid-range (35-100 foot) points of concern like gates, roads or driveways, this camera is even more frequently used is corporate environment such as long and narrow warehouse aisles.

The Radius has is a fisheye 360 degree camera. The Radius is often used in office environments where it is installed in the middle of the room where it can look into several cubicles at once. The Radius can record at 12MP (about 1.5 4K or 6x 1080P). Because it is a 360 degree camera, it records a circular image. This image is usually then dewarped into Panorama views or ePTZ (digital pan tilt zoom) views (see below for samples). Each Panoramic or ePTZ view can be recorded independently of the fisheye circular view, but because dewarping takes processing power, it will use a camera channel on your NVR for each view that you want to view/record. The Radius also has an an integrated microphone and speaker. It should be able to pick up a normal speaking voice at 15 feet. Unlike recording video, recording audio is heavily regulated. It is very important when recording audio to follow the rules and regulations set out in the Federal Wiretap Act; because of this law, the microphone's default setting is "off." If you want to turn the microphone on, we will gladly help you, but you should make sure you are complying with the law before doing so.
